Cord Blood Banking

Cord blood is the blood that is left behind in the umbilical cord and placenta after birth. 1. Register

Submit the Healthcord Registration form online, by fax, email or mail.

2. Receive Your Kit

Immediately after you enroll, we will ship out the collection kit. Hold onto the Kit until the delivery date.

3. Bring the Kit to the Hospital

On the big day, bring your Kit with you to the hospital and give it to your delivery team.

4. Cord Blood & Cord Tissue Collection

After the baby is born, cord blood will be collected into the cord blood collection bag. Your physician will then collect the umbilical cord and place it in the collection vessel for cord tissue.

5. At the Lab

Stem cells from cord blood and cord tissue samples are purified, concentrated and cryogenically preserved using computer operated controlled-rate freezing.

6. Using Banked Stem Cells

The stem cells can be stored for the lifetime of your child and used at any time. They can also potentially be used to treat other members of your family.

Yes! You can choose to delay cord clamping even if you bank cord blood and/or cord tissue. Delayed clamping will not significantly affect the yield of stem cells that you can harvest from the cord blood.

There is a high probability that your child’s cord blood stem cells can be used for siblings and other family members. Your child’s cord blood stem cells will be a perfect match to your child. However, it may also be very useful for other members of your family. There is a 25% chance that your child’s cord blood can be used for one of his/her siblings, and there is also a high chance that your child’s cord blood stem cells can be used for parents or grandparents.

Donating cord blood is the same as donating blood. You cannot ask for your baby’s cord blood back when you need it. Also, only a small number of donated cord blood units donated actually become banked and the majority become discarded.
